Green organizations praise the message from support parties
It is encouraging news for both nature and the climate that the four current support parties are today demanding that there be significant reductions in agriculture over the next few years. Agriculture is the cause of so much pollution of both the climate and the environment that a significant restructuring of agriculture cannot wait another minute, says the Green Transition Denmark, Greenpeace, Denmark's Nature Conservation Association, the Green Youth Movement and Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke.
Radikale, Enhedslisten, SF and Alternativet writes today in Information, that agriculture must deliver significant reductions in the next few years. According to the parties, agriculture must deliver reductions that ensure that Denmark meets the high range of Denmark's 2025 climate goals. Concretely, this corresponds to around 3,5 million tonnes of CO2, and thus the parties significantly raise the level of ambition compared to what has previously been announced in the debate on the green transformation of agriculture.
Agriculture currently accounts for a third of Denmark's emissions - but without further action, the sector will account for well over half of Denmark's emissions in 2030.
The parties also say in the announcement that agriculture in the future must take up less space, grow less feed for fewer animals, and instead grow more food directly for people. The move is praised by the green organisations, who are happy about the move.
- The green support parties put their finger on the sore spot in Danish climate policy. For far too many years, agriculture has been given a free ticket to more pollution. A high CO2 tax should be introduced, we should have more plant-based foods and much less meat production. And then low-lying soils must be taken out, so that there is room for more nature and biodiversity. The four supporting parties promise to speed up the green transformation of agriculture, and that is really needed, says Bjarke Møller, director of the Council for Green Transformation.
- Enhedslisten, Radikale, SF and Alternativet are now ready to roll up their sleeves in earnest. This is exactly what we need. Agriculture's enormous production of cows and pigs is the biggest challenge at all for both Denmark's greenhouse gas emissions and for our suffering nature. Instead of postponing the inevitable transformation of agriculture, we must act now. It is the next few years that will be decisive, says Kristine Clement, campaign manager for agriculture, forests and nature at Greenpeace.
- It is a strong announcement from the supporting parties the day before the election. It is absolutely crucial to achieving our climate goals that agriculture's contribution to the green transition becomes significantly greater in the coming years. I completely agree that this must be done through a greater focus on plant-based foods and that the most effective tool is a high CO2e tax on agriculture. I am pleased that the support parties stand together on that message, Lars Midtiby, Director of Denmark's Nature Conservation Association
- The support parties are really ready to take the bull by the horns with their announcement, and it is a game changer for our nature, environment and climate. In the coming years, we can have a significantly greener country with both more nature and far more climate-friendly agriculture if the politicians take action now, says Marie Rørby, activist in the Green Youth Movement.
- It is a strong announcement from Enhedslisten, SF, Alternativet and Radikale, and hopefully more parties will join. We have just received grim warnings about the development of the climate crisis from the UN Secretary-General, and it should be clear to all responsible politicians that time is running out if we are to avoid the worst consequences of climate change. Therefore, we must and must tackle a significant restructuring of agriculture immediately, says Tim Whyte, general secretary of Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke.
