Climate and animal organizations: There is a forgotten greenhouse gas that Denmark must take responsibility for
If we are to slow global warming, Denmark must take responsibility for its methane emissions. A green transition of agriculture and a more plant-based consumption are crucial to achieving rapid climate progress, write seven climate and animal organizations.
If we are to succeed in slowing global warming, we cannot continue to ignore the powerful greenhouse gas methane.
A Danish plan is needed to reduce methane emissions, and this requires a serious transition to a more plant-based agriculture.
When the calendar changed to 1 on January 2025, it was clear that 2024 was the warmest year ever measured. Calculations showed 1,6 degrees above the average temperature during industrialization.
This means we exceeded the Paris Agreement's goal of a maximum increase of 1,5 degrees. However, the agreement's goal is still "alive" as the temperature increase is calculated as an average over several years.
But the high temperatures in 2024 emphasize that we are in a hurry. And therefore we need to become sharper about which climate policy will have the greatest effect the fastest.
And here it becomes particularly relevant to look at the warming effect of the various greenhouse gases, where the powerful but short-lived greenhouse gas methane has a significantly greater warming effect than CO2 in the short term.
Decision-makers get the right basis
Methane is only in the atmosphere for about 12-15 years. Therefore, it makes a big difference whether you calculate the greenhouse gas potential for this particular greenhouse gas over a 20-year or 100-year period.
The greenhouse potential describes the total warming effect caused by the current emission over the entire selected period.
More specifically, this means that one ton of methane over 100 years has a warming effect equivalent to 28 tons of CO2, while one ton of methane over 20 years has a warming effect equivalent to 84 tons of CO2.
Methane thus warms the planet over 80 times more than CO2 over a 20-year period.
It is therefore a problem that only the greenhouse potential, calculated over a 100-year period, is included in decision-making processes today.
Decision-makers should consider the greenhouse gas potential calculated over a 20-year period on an equal footing with the 100-year perspective – to better be able to make decisions that will have a “quick effect” on global warming.
It is necessary to focus on achieving significant effects in the short term, as the temperature increase will otherwise result in irreversible changes and damage the planet's life-support systems.
Rising temperatures risk, among other things, the Atlantic Ocean Current collapsing, and the West Antarctic Ice Sheet melting irreversibly, causing sea level rise. We should therefore set sail as soon as possible to reduce global warming.
By including the 20-year perspective, it will become clear how big an effect methane emissions have on global warming in the short term – and thus also how big an effect reductions in methane emissions will have on global warming.
It will also provide decision-makers with the right basis for making the necessary decisions.
Agriculture is the largest emitter of methane
In Denmark, agriculture is responsible for approximately 80 percent of methane emissions.
As an intensive agricultural country, we should take much greater responsibility for our emissions.
Livestock production accounts for virtually all emissions, with 62 percent of emissions originating from the digestive process in ruminants and 38 percent originating from livestock manure.
If we want to significantly reduce our methane emissions, we cannot avoid making significant reductions in the agricultural sector.
This will require a transformation of agriculture, where we move towards increased production of vegetables, grains and legumes for people.
The agreement on the implementation of a Green Denmark could be an important step towards agriculture with a lower climate impact through the CO2 tax and land set-aside.
If we succeed in implementing all elements of the agreement, Denmark will potentially reduce its methane emissions by approximately 25 percent in 2030 compared to 2020, and by 30 percent in 2035.
The agreement could lead to significant reductions in agriculture if implemented as intended. But it is far from enough, and there are some significant gaps in the choice of climate measures.
The global methane pledge requires a Danish action plan
Denmark, together with the EU, has signed the Global Methane Pledge to reduce methane emissions globally by 30 percent in 2030 compared to 2020.
If that promise is to be kept, it requires that the 159 countries that have joined the pledge, as well as China, which has a special agreement, reduce their emissions by 40-45 percent.
With the green tripartite agreement, Denmark has taken the lead compared to many other countries when it comes to methane reductions.
It is positive that Denmark is showing the way forward, but we must do even more. As an intensive agricultural country, we should take much greater responsibility for our emissions – both in the short and long term.
We believe that Denmark should set a goal to reduce Danish methane emissions by at least 40-45 percent by 2035 compared to 2020 levels. This is necessary to contribute to our share of the global methane pledge and to comply with the Paris Agreement.
This requires methane reductions of 30-60 percent globally in 2030 compared to 2020 levels to keep the temperature increase below 1,5 degrees.
However, it is not enough for Denmark to “just” set an ambitious target. We must also show the way to achieve that target with concrete actions. The government should therefore create a plan for methane reductions that shows the ways to realize the target.
Restructuring both agricultural production and consumption is crucial
In the transformation of agriculture, it is important that we do not turn a blind eye to methane emissions, but also keep biodiversity and animal welfare in mind.
This requires us to move away from extensive industrial animal production and towards greater plant-based food production.
At the same time, it is crucial for the success of the transition that the Danish population reaches out to a greater extent for plant-based foods.
We will therefore have to address the number of animals in agriculture and not just make the individual animal more climate-efficient – for example, with subsidies for the feed additive Bovaer, which risks keeping cows in stables rather than allowing them to graze – or by further intensifying pig production.
This leads to poorer animal welfare, and we need to move away from that. Through a change in food production, we will be able to achieve a rapid and positive effect on the climate.
At the same time, it is crucial for the success of the transition that the Danish population reaches for plant-based steaks, beans and kale rather than minced beef when they shop for dinner.
If consumption remains as it is today, we risk that the climate footprint from our animal consumption will end up in the same place as our clothing consumption – we will send it on to other countries. At the same time, many farmers are willing to change production if only there is a certainty of sales – for example, for legumes.
Municipal kitchens, supermarkets and politicians should therefore take the lead and make it more accessible for the population to eat more legumes and vegetables. If the canteen's spinach lasagna is delicious, there is a greater chance that it will be served at the dinner table at home.
Furthermore, we need to invest more in developing crops and products that can be exported to the rest of the world. Because today we already export the majority of our production. Therefore, there is a need for efforts and solutions that contribute to changing consumption – both nationally and globally.
Now we need to get to work – both to ensure that the implementation of the tripartite agreement is successful, so that the projected methane reductions are actually realized.
But we also need to make a plan for how to further reduce methane emissions from agriculture to quickly limit global warming.
We do this by converting agriculture to a much greater extent to produce plant food for people.
