Politicians should stop burning wood in the municipality's supply

You need a strong cause that will generate support among the population, strengthen your municipality's green profile and make a difference to society. So while you're busy making election posters, Facebook videos and participating in various debates, we'd like to help you with a strong cause: Stop burning wood in the municipality's supply. Why, you might ask?

1) Citizens' wallets: Imports of wood pellets and wood chips have increased dramatically – more than 95 percent of wood pellets and 50 percent of wood chips come from abroad. Danish overconsumption makes us dependent on the global raw materials market, where prices fluctuate and are expected to increase, because wood biomass is a limited resource that must be used in many places in the transition. Electrification of heat production helps make heat cheaper for citizens in your municipality than when it is based on wood burning.

2) Climate: Although it looks green on paper, the burning of wood in Denmark has added over 120 million tons of CO2 to the atmosphere. Wood actually emits more than coal, even when it is burned. The damage (increased drought, floods, forest fires) caused by increased warming will not be removed, even if a new tree absorbs the same amount of CO2 after a few decades.

3) Nature: At the same time, we are putting massive pressure on foreign forests – often far beyond our control. Countless bad examples show that certification is no guarantee of nature conservation, and a large part of the biomass is also undocumented today. This speaks against the fact that promises to use “sustainable biomass” ensure nature and climate conservation. In Denmark, the high demand for wood has led to a large removal of branches, tops, roots and dead wood. Danish forests have an average of 6,3 m³/ha of dead wood, and approximately 2/3 of the area has none at all. This is far below the levels necessary if the forests are to have any biodiversity value, where far more than 50 m³/ha is needed.

So you are helping both the climate and biodiversity by stopping the burning party.

4) Self-sufficiency: In these times, it is important to make oneself independent from geopolitical power struggles. Electrification with local self-sufficiency of renewable energy not only provides more security, but also allows the city's energy generation to benefit the local community and can contribute to the financing of local needs, such as the renovation of the village school, a cycle path or recreational areas. There are already many examples of this - including at Vejle, where a large solar park also benefits citizens with new paths, the clearing of watercourses and increased biodiversity.

Why now, you think? A lot has happened since biomass was introduced as a transitional solution to get rid of coal. In the meantime, we have increased the consumption of biomass to three times the globally sustainable level and burn around 90pct. of all the wood we consume in Denmark directly. Last year, the world passed 1,5 degrees of warming for the first time. When we burn wood, it immediately releases more CO2 into the atmosphere, which causes damage and increases the risk of serious, irreversible changes in the climate system. The time it takes for a newly planted tree to absorb the amount again is a growing problem in an already overheated world. Therefore, we should prioritize solutions that reduce emissions now – rather than those that will only work in decades.

At the same time, technological developments in heat pumps and renewable energy have boomed. That's the good news. Because there's no longer any need to burn wood for lukewarm water and electricity.

Therefore, it makes political and economic sense to set a clear course away from burning and towards electrification. But is it possible to avoid burning wood when we currently produce heat and electricity from wood? The answer is yes. It is possible to produce energy without burning trees and fossil sources.

There are now many good alternatives to wood. In Svendborg, wood burning has been replaced with heat pumps. Skærbækværket and Studstrupværket, two of the country's largest combined heat and power plants, will also abandon wood burning after Kredsløb, TVIS and EWII have decided that the heat they receive in the future should not come from wood, but from electricity-based solutions such as heat pumps that use local energy sources such as air, seawater, wastewater and geothermal energy.

Things are not going so well in Copenhagen, where there is talk of building a CCS plant at the Amagerværket. That is, the biomass plant, which is Denmark's largest consumer of wood. Over one million tons of wood, primarily from abroad. The large investment will be a big mistake that will lock the city into excessive wood consumption far into the future.

Now that we can electrify, it's crazy to ship millions of tons of wood in from forests around the world, just to burn it, spend billions on capturing and possibly storing the emissions, and thus delay the implementation of future truly renewable energy sources in your municipality's supply.

Your role as a politician

So what is your role as a local politician? As a local politician, you have a unique chance to secure the green supply of the future, protect citizens from price shocks and at the same time help our nature and climate. As you know, transforming the energy supply takes time. That's why it's important that you help make the decisions that put your local community on the right track, now.

Therefore, you must work to: 1) Adopt a municipal phase-out date for wood biomass in district heating – with a realistic milestone plan. 2) Prioritize investments in electrification with large electrically powered heat pumps, surplus heat and storage. 3) Stop investments in combined heat and power based on biomass combustion. 4) Drop plans for CCS at biomass plants.

We have the technology and the economics in place – now it’s about direction. With a clear plan for phasing out wood biomass, you can strengthen the municipality’s green credibility, ensure stable and competitive heating prices and create local value. The toxic legacy in our buildings: Get PFAS out of construction

When talking about PFAS, most people think of contaminated groundwater, fire-fighting foam or frying pans. Few people know that PFAS can also be found in, for example, contact lenses, guitar strings, condoms and garden cushions. Or in the many different building products that create the framework for our everyday lives.

But the report 'PFAS in building products – challenges and solutions on the path towards circular construction' reveals that the construction industry has a major and overlooked problem. Namely PFAS, which can potentially be found in everything from paint, sealants and floor coverings to insulation and facades. PFAS make the materials water, dirt and fire repellent, among other things – but they are also highly toxic and almost impossible to break down.

That is why PFAS are also referred to as eternal chemicals. The substances accumulate in people, in nature – and in our buildings. The report's test of 44 building products purchased in Danish DIY stores showed indications of PFAS in every fourth sample. There were PFAS indications in roofing felts, wooden floors, insulation and facade panels. This means that today we build and transform homes, schools and offices with materials that may in the future be classified as hazardous waste. This is the opposite direction of the circular economy – we are incorporating harmful chemicals into construction that can destroy our precious resources, and that future generations will have to deal with.

Legislation lags behind reality

The construction industry has received another incentive to contribute to the circular economy with the new legislation on selective demolition, and the ambitions for transformations and increased recycling are increasingly central to major developers. But how can we recycle a material that potentially contains harmful chemicals?

The EU and Denmark have taken important steps towards banning PFAS in clothing and kitchenware, but construction is largely unregulated. Only a few substances such as PFOS and PFOA are banned. The rest of the more than 12.000 PFAS compounds fly under the radar.

The new Construction Products Regulation could be a turning point. It will require documentation of substances that are harmful to health and will eventually introduce a digital product passport. But as it stands now, information about content will only be available to authorities – not to architects, contractors or builders. It is absurd that the industry that has to make choices about materials should not be allowed to know the chemical content. If PFAS is to be eliminated from construction, legislation must create transparency. Anything else can look like authorized greenwashing.

Responsibility and action – from developer to manufacturer

The PFAS report points to a number of concrete solutions. Developers and consultants must set requirements such as requesting documentation, requiring analyses performed in approved laboratories and choosing materials without PFAS. PFAS is not necessary to create durable or functional buildings; what we built 100 years ago did not contain PFAS. There are alternatives. Manufacturers must take their share of responsibility. PFAS can be designed out of products, and substitution must be an active goal. The companies that lead the way should be highlighted as role models.

At the same time, digital material and building passports should be introduced, where PFAS and other harmful chemicals are registered. This will give the craftsmen and recycling sector of the future the knowledge they need to handle materials safely and enable the real estate sector to get a handle on what their investments consist of.

The hidden price forever

The Nordic Council of Ministers has calculated that PFAS-related health impacts cost society between 52 and 84 billion euros per year in Europe. This includes costs for treating liver damage, thyroid diseases, obesity, fertility problems and cancer. In addition, there are costs for landfill, clean-up, etc. This is not only a real-time economic disaster. Future generations will pay the bill, which will only grow as long as we continue to use PFAS. Avoiding PFAS is not a technical challenge – it is an ethical and economic necessity.

A call to politicians and industry

PFAS in construction is a problem that cannot be seen or smelled. But it can hide in the walls, roofs and floors around us. In order to future-proof our society and resources, we must stop building new environmental bombs. Therefore, politicians must extend the PFAS ban to include construction products, introduce requirements for content declaration and support the development of alternatives to PFAS.

The construction industry has a unique opportunity: to become the first sector to take responsibility for its own materials – from cradle to grave. But this requires us to say no to the eternal chemicals and yes to a truly free and informed choice.

Youth environmental monitoring shows need for 'tougher' legislation

What does plastic pollution look like in Danish nature? 30.000 children and young people in Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands have given us a rare detailed picture of what is actually out there. And something is striking: We hardly find any plastic lids anymore. On the other hand, there are still cigarette butts everywhere. Both products have otherwise been the target of environmental regulation in recent years, so why this difference?

The mass experiment was carried out by Astra in collaboration with the University of Southern Denmark, Roskilde University and the Royal Danish Academy, and is the starting point for the research project Change4Circularity – a sub-project of TRACE, the national partnership for circular economy. In both 2019 and 2024, plastic waste in nature has been mapped as part of the large citizen science project. At the same time, a number of different types of environmental regulation have been implemented in these years with a focus on plastic. By comparing the results, it becomes clear which type of legislation actually has an effect and meets the purpose of avoiding plastic waste in nature.

Cigarette butts took clear first place in the mass experiment as the most found type of waste in both years. In both experiments, cigarette butts thus accounted for approximately one third of all collected plastic pieces. We see the opposite trend for a number of other products, of which significantly more were collected in 2019 compared to 2024. This applies, among others, to plastic straws, plastic lids for drinking bottles and large carrier bags with handles.

It's about proper regulation

The difference is not about coincidences, or that we have started to throw selected plastic products in the trash. It is about how these products are regulated. There is now a legal requirement that plastic lids on drinking bottles must be attached. This means that the lid is no longer dropped or thrown away, but is physically attached to the bottle. Straws have been completely removed from the market, while a minimum price has been introduced for large carrier bags, so that they can no longer be given out for free in stores. The measures mentioned, which include mandatory design requirements, outright bans and financial incentives, therefore appear to be effective in reducing the amount of plastic waste in nature.

When it comes to cigarette butts, however, a completely different path has been chosen. Instead of requiring prevention, the tobacco industry has simply been imposed with a so-called clean-up responsibility. This means that the producers have to pay for the municipalities to collect the butts. Not a word about preventing the butts from ending up in nature in the first place. Not a single incentive to change product design or behavior. The result? Butts and nicotine pouches are still everywhere – from schoolyards and beaches to city squares and parks.

Producer responsibility is an extremely soft form of regulation, and with it we effectively accept that millions of cigarette butts are thrown into the environment every single day as long as someone pays to pick them up afterwards. It is neither effective nor sustainable.

Cigarette butts are among the most widespread forms of waste globally. They contain plastics and chemicals that harm animals, soil and aquatic environments. The fact that they are still everywhere is not due to a lack of attention. It is due to a conscious political decision not to impose requirements for design and prevention, but only 'cleaning up' in the form of an economic desk exercise.

We can do better. The data from the mass experiment shows that targeted regulation works. When we set requirements for product design, use financial incentives and bans, it makes a difference. Therefore, we urge that it is these types of 'tougher' legislation that politicians incorporate into future environmental legislation.

It's time we brought regulation into the 21st century. The environment can't just be vacuumed after the party. We need to prevent the waste from ending up there in the first place.

Methane is a low-hanging, green fruit in climate policy. Yet it is hidden away in computational models

A new one scientific study shows that a collapse of the Gulf Stream could happen as early as 10 to 20 years as a result of global warming. This would mean a significantly changed and colder climate in Denmark, while the southern hemisphere would experience far more and more intense heat waves and droughts. If this happens, it would have major consequences for Danish agriculture and require us to think about food production in a completely new way. Therefore, climate action that has a significant effect on global warming in the short term is more important than ever.

Methane makes the biggest difference here and now

Everyone knows that we need to reduce emissions of climate-damaging greenhouse gases, but few know that reductions in the greenhouse gas methane have a much greater effect on global warming than CO.2 – especially in the short term.

In 20 years, one ton of methane warms the planet over 80 times more than one ton of CO2. Over 100 years, it is about 30 times more. The difference is because methane only stays in the atmosphere for 12-15 years. This means that methane reductions today will be felt already this decade.

At a time when global temperatures have already risen by 1,1 degrees since industrialisation, and 2024 was the warmest year on record with a global temperature rise of 1,6 degrees, we cannot afford to wait for long-term results. In the EU alone, climate change is already estimated to have cost over 300 billion kroner this year – an amount expected to triple by 2029.

Focus must be on the next decades

When Denmark calculates its climate footprint and the effect of climate policy decisions, the different warming effects of greenhouse gases are converted to the common standard CO2-equivalents (CO2e) – so how many tons of CO2 one ton of a given greenhouse gas, such as methane, corresponds to.

Since the Kyoto Protocol was adopted in 1992, has the vast majority of climate models — including those used as the scientific basis for international agreements such as the Paris Agreement — converted methane to CO2e based on the global warming potential over 100 years (GWP100)The 100-year perspective as a standard is today in many ways outdated, because today we are faced with imminent climate goals that must be met, and not least temperature increases that can cause irreversible climate change.

If we instead used figures for the effect of greenhouse gases on global warming over a 20-year period (GWP20), it would become quite clear what a significant effect methane has on global warming in the coming decades.

GWP100, on which all political decisions and calculations are based, therefore underplays the significant role that methane reductions have in limiting temperature increases in this decade. Decision-makers should therefore also include the short-term perspective (GWP20) in the future to clarify which decisions will have a faster effect on global warming.

Agriculture is the primary emitter

The primary sources of methane emissions globally are the energy, waste and agricultural sectors. In Denmark, around 80 percent of emissions come from agriculture, of which approximately 57 percent of emissions come from the digestive process in ruminants (especially cows), and 43 percent come from livestock manure.

The Green Tripartite can with CO2The tax and land set-aside will be an important step towards greener agriculture, which can also inspire other countries to transform their food production. But if Denmark is to truly be the green pioneer that we pride ourselves on being, it will require that the transformation of agriculture towards a more plant-based agriculture be accelerated. This will require further initiatives that affect both the production and consumption sides.

There are many steps on the way to ensuring the necessary methane reductions to reduce global warming, avoid major climate damage and reduce climate effects on Danish agriculture.

The first step is simple: Put methane on the agenda, calculate the effect on global warming in the short term, and include it in the basis of our climate policy. The next step requires more – but it is both necessary and possible. To act consistently on it with a clear plan that shows how Denmark will significantly reduce its methane emissions.

Methane reductions are not the whole solution, but they are one of the fastest ways to slow warming. That is why methane needs to be brought to light and not hidden in calculation models.

Lax nitrogen requirements will turn the green tripartite into an empty shell

The dead fjords, the greasy muck and the fish floating lifeless up to the surface have become a sad symbol of an unbalanced marine environment. The reason is well known: Every winter, large amounts of nitrogen from the fields are washed into fjords and coastal waters. Nitrogen that feeds the algae and suffocates life below the surface.

There are big plans for the green transition, including with the Green Tripartite, which aims to convert 15 percent of Denmark's agricultural area to nature. 43 billion kroner has been allocated to make it attractive for farmers to take the most polluting land out of use. But without ambitious nitrogen regulation, the green transition is like a bottomless boat - no matter how hard we row, we will still take in water. Neither the 'reverse Dalgas' nor a balanced marine environment can become a reality if we do not work hard. Therefore, we call on the government, SF, Radikale Venstre, Conservatives and Liberal Alliance to introduce ambitious nitrogen regulation that creates an incentive to convert the agricultural land that pollutes the aquatic environment the most.

The foundation of the green transition

Nitrogen emissions are not just a problem for the aquatic environment – ​​they undermine Denmark's entire green transition. Without control of nitrogen emissions, it will be difficult to achieve our climate goals, create better nature and comply with the EU's Water Framework Directive. Lax regulation will make the Green Tripartite an empty shell, an expensive compromise with limited impact, and our fjords and inland waters will continue their decline. Nitrogen regulation is therefore the bedrock of Denmark's green transition. Without it, the project will sink. With it, we can ensure that investments are actually translated into progress for life in the inland fjords and waters, more nature, more ecology and a real climate effect.

The most contaminated soils must be removed

To be effective, nitrogen regulation must be targeted. It must make it less lucrative to cultivate the lands that pollute the aquatic environment the most, while the more robust lands are not unnecessarily hit hard. There is a big difference in the amount of nitrogen emissions from different farms – one farm can easily emit ten times as much nitrogen as another. Therefore, it is crucial that we take the right lands out of cultivation. Such regulation makes it both economically and environmentally sensible to convert vulnerable lands to nature, wetlands and forests, and to convert more of the lands that are still under cultivation to organic farming. This will reduce pollution, store carbon and benefit biodiversity. And it will keep sky-high land prices in check.

Lax regulation wastes money

The Danes have already allocated 43 billion kroner to the Green Tripartite. It is a historic investment in our shared nature. But if we do not get strong and targeted nitrogen regulation, we risk that the money will not deliver the promised benefits. If the most polluting soils remain in rotation, nitrogen emissions will continue. We may therefore end up spending billions and the fjords will remain dead, instead of targeting the effort and thus tackling the core of the problem. This is both environmentally and economically irresponsible. The Green Tripartite was a compromise but also an opportunity. An opportunity to create a Denmark where we get life back in the sea, and where nature, climate and agriculture can exist side by side. But that opportunity will drown if we do not get nitrogen regulation that can keep the ship afloat.

The green transition doesn't just require more money – it requires solid requirements and regulation. Without effective nitrogen regulation, we can't land dry-shod. With it, we can finally set course for a marine environment in balance – and a Denmark that holds water.

New EU proposal is pure sausage talk

On October 8, the European Parliament voted in favor of a ban on using so-called “meat words” for plant products.

The argument is that consumers are confused by terms like “plant sausage” or “vegan burger.” But is it less confusing if a soy sausage is to be called a soy cylinder, soy bar or soy roll in the future? Or if a vegetable steak is to be called a plant plate or grill disc?

If you really fear that language will confuse people, it's hard to see how far we should take that logic. Then we should probably also ban words like hotdog that don't have dog in it, or ham salad that doesn't contain lettuce. I don't think consumers will be confused by those products.

Surveys shows that the majority of consumers are not confused by the use of words like sausage or burger for plant products when the products are clearly labeled. Words like sausage and burger describe not only what something is made of, but also how it is used. For example, that a soy sausage is good to put in bread, or that plant mince can be fried into plant steaks.

It feels stupid to have to waste time on this debate. Honestly, it sounds more like a convenient excuse to give the meat and dairy industry a competitive advantage. Animal producers already have a wide range of advantages in the support they can receive, for example, slaughter premiums and support for advertising their products. There is therefore no need to widen the gap between plant and animal products even further with this ban.

There is also a duality in the fact that the EU is in the process of simplifying legislation so that regulation becomes easier for industry and companies. This obviously does not apply to producers of plant products, where they instead choose to make additional regulation. The consequence is that it becomes more expensive for companies, who have to rebrand their products and come up with new names.

I hope that some sense will come into the negotiation process with the Member States, and that the Danish Presidency will stand firm on the right to healthy food in a greener direction. Denmark has already shown the way with the National Plant Action Plan, a concrete example of how to promote innovation, health and sustainability instead of slowing it down.

Because if the EU really wants to take climate, health and consumers' free choice seriously, then we must make it easier, not harder, to choose green.

Make the Organic Food Label permanent and come to terms with the goals

Fortunately, there is the Organic Food Label that can help achieve the goals. The government knows that. It has set aside money for the Organic Food Label in 2026, and that should be commended. But what happens after that? Hopefully, the Organic Food Label will also be prioritized in the Finance Acts that follow. Yet, many of us actors within the entire food value chain are questioning the situation. Why has the sustainable financing of the food label not been secured in the Finance Act proposal? Often, people know the challenge, but are looking for a solution. Here, we and the government know the challenge and have a tool whose effect is known.

All experience shows that in addition to the label motivating kitchen managers to include organic food on the menu, plants are given higher priority when kitchens receive the Organic Food Label, and food waste is reduced.

This is the way they can often get organic on the table within the same budget. It is good for the climate, drinking water, the aquatic environment, biodiversity, nature, animal welfare and for ourselves, who get food without the risk of pesticide residues. At the same time, the low consumption of medicine in organic farming supports an approach where one works to strengthen the health of both humans and animals in what is called a “one health” perspective. We've said it before, but we'll say it again. It takes preparation and investment to make your kitchen organic. Suppliers must be found, menus must be changed to be more plant-rich, new workflows must be introduced, and investments must be made in systems to document organic. Kitchens will only get started if they know the label will exist for many years to come.

Therefore, our call is clear.

Now remove the recurring uncertainty you created when you, for the first time since the brand's birth in 2009, removed the funds in 2023 and had to make an emergency rescue maneuver before everyone went on Christmas vacation to ensure its existence. You have just relaunched the Danish map of restaurants with the Organic Restaurant Label, so perhaps you cannot imagine yourself discontinuing a brand that is so popular.

A label that has proven its worth and has been copied by several other EU countries after they visited Denmark to learn how we have become organic world champions. If that is the case, we might as well settle it once and for all and give it a permanent place on par with the state-controlled red island.

Billions in agricultural subsidies could be spent much more wisely

Today, the majority of EU agricultural support still goes to direct income support – regardless of how or what is produced. In practice, these tax euros support intensive production, which burdens the climate, environment, animal welfare, drinking water and nature – and which, through high consumption of antibiotics in livestock farms, contributes to the spread of antibiotic resistance. That money could be spent much more wisely.

It is not about taking support away from farmers. They are on the front lines of both the climate and biodiversity crises and depend on stable frameworks. For some, EU support schemes can be the difference between whether the accounts are consistent or not. The task for European agriculture ministers is to give them that security, but in a way where farmers, unlike today, are rewarded for the solutions that society needs.

When a farmer secures habitats and food for insects, birds, amphibians and other life on the cultivated land, takes land back to nature, avoids the use of pesticides and provides better conditions for animals, this not only benefits production – it also constitutes a significant good for society as a whole. This also applies when the farmer grows food for humans rather than animal feed and reduces the negative impacts on animal welfare and the environmental and climate impacts associated with animal production.

The problem is that today it is rarely worthwhile for the farmer to participate in the necessary transition – and there is much evidence that it is only going in the wrong direction.

Our recommendation is clear: Direct income support must be gradually phased out over the coming CAP periods and replaced by payment for documented green and animal-friendly results that benefit society.

The majority of the hectare support in Denmark goes to the largest farms – approx. 5-6000 farmers. We therefore also propose to provide the possibility for small farms to be taken into account through a so-called multiplication factor, so that they receive a higher support rate. This will create more life in the countryside with new farmers who invest in plant production for people and provide better conditions for animals.

New, more sustainable food value chains – including plant-based products – must have the same political support that animal production has had for decades. And if direct support continues to be linked to livestock or livestock products, demands for significantly better conditions for animals must be made in the future.

If the ministers want, the EU's agricultural support can become a driver for green transition and an investment in more robust food production. If they do not act, we risk that yet another billion-dollar support scheme will end up undermining the goals that the EU itself has set for climate, nature and animal welfare. Denmark has a unique opportunity with its EU presidency to show the way. That chance should not be wasted.

The sea is still gasping – now we must hold on to our ambitions

There are many indications that this year's oxygen depletion will rank among the worst ever, thus breaking new, sad records.

This is the unfortunate conclusion based on the preliminary measurements of oxygen depletion this year, which is not expected to peak until September. The oily sludge that is currently drifting ashore along the coasts is a brutal reminder that our rivers, fjords and inland waters are in a deep and ongoing crisis.

In the midst of the seriousness, however, the green tripartite agreement marks a new breakthrough. The broad agreement has created hope that we can finally do something about the oxygen depletion through a fundamental restructuring of agriculture. A restructuring that agriculture can also see itself in for the benefit of the climate, nature and the aquatic environment. But the tripartite agreement is first and foremost a promise that must now be fulfilled.

Here, the municipalities play a key role. This is where the national ambitions must be translated into concrete solutions. It is in the municipalities that the planning for wetlands, afforestation and the extraction of low-lying soils must take place. And it is in the municipalities that the local three parties are working intensively to deliver conversion plans before the end of the year.

Lack of clarification
This autumn's municipal elections are therefore a crucial test of the political will to ensure action. Every municipality has the opportunity to make a difference. Without healthy fjords and clean coasts, we will not only lose important ecosystems and great nature experiences, but also tourism, local jobs and quality of life close to where people live. Voters have a right to know how their local candidates will ensure that the tripartite goals and local restructuring plans become a reality in their municipality.

But local efforts cannot stand alone. Fortunately, an important step has been taken at Christiansborg with a political partial agreement on the famous nitrogen hammer in early summer, which will deliver reductions of approximately 7.100 tons of nitrogen per year from 2027. It is an ambitious and necessary step in the right direction.

The challenge, however, is that the agreement is only a declaration of intent until the crucial details are in place. Ahead of us are negotiations in the autumn on how the burden will be distributed and, crucially, how the affected landowners will be compensated.

Without clarification, the landowners are left in limbo. It is a brake on voluntary efforts and on constructive cooperation in the municipalities and the local tripartite parties. Because no one can make long-term decisions about their land and their future on an uncertain basis. If the tripartite party is to succeed, it requires a clear signal so that those who live off the land know what they have to comply with.

This year's oxygen depletion is a reminder of what we are fighting for: life in the fjords, clean water and healthy coasts for future generations. The green tripartite has set the direction. Now it is important to stay the course and bring the ambitions to life – both in the new municipal councils and in the upcoming negotiations at Christiansborg.

Animal production is still favored – we need to change that.

Denmark can use the EU presidency to push for a plant action plan for the EU that ensures greater diversity in the proteins on the plate, provides greater security of supply, health and growth potential for the EU.

On 1 July, Denmark took over the role of EU Council of Ministers, and with that comes the opportunity to set the agenda for EU negotiations in the autumn. The Danish presidency has already highlighted an EU action plan for plant-based foods and a general EU protein strategy as areas of focus to work on. forAnd it makes good sense that, as part of the EU's protein strategy, an action plan for plant-based foods is being developed.

According to a study published in nature food In 2024, an average European will eat 82 grams of protein per day, of which 49 grams come from animal sources and 33 grams come from plants. This means that we are eating too much protein compared to the recommendations of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which recommends an average protein intake of 46 grams per person per day. But it also means that there is potential in ensuring greater variation in where we get our protein from.

Today, the production of meat and dairy products is dependent on a large import of feed from, among other things, rainforest areas in Brazil. This places Europe in a vulnerable position in terms of supply security when we look into a future with trade wars and conflicts that could limit the possibility of large imports of feed and could affect the prices of feed. If instead the focus is on developing an agricultural system within planetary boundaries that is self-sufficient in feed in Europe, it will benefit both security of supply, the climate and the environmental impact of animal food production. However, as part of the EU's protein strategy, an action plan for plant-based foods should also be drawn up. There are many opportunities in increasing the diversity of the EU's production of proteins for humans. This is about using more plant proteins, e.g. legumes, in our food and developing new types of plant products with improved taste and consistency, e.g. through fermentation with fungal spores.

There may also be opportunities in being able to produce proteins in completely new ways, for example milk protein produced by bacteria in a tank, or beef grown in a laboratory without ever having seen a cow. However, none of these innovations can stand alone. It is necessary to bring a wide range of solutions into play to benefit security of supply, animal welfare, climate and health.

It is not an easy political environment for the Danish Presidency to navigate, as plant proteins and alternative ways of producing proteins repeatedly meet resistance from EU member states. But that does not make it any less important to stand firm on the opportunities that may arise by opening up the possibilities of proteins from many different sources, and ensuring a greater degree of protein self-sufficiency in the EU.

Plant-based products and alternative proteins also do not have the same competitive conditions as animal products, which have received support for most parts of the process for a number of years. The problem is that animal production is still favoured in the support schemes for agriculture, for example with coupled support for livestock under agricultural support and the EU's sales promotion scheme, which still finances meat advertising. This distortion must be addressed in an action plan for plant-based foods.

But what could this look like in practice? Shortly before the summer holidays, around 70 organisations jointly published a bid for, what the EU action plan for plant-based foods should look like. If we are to future-proof Europe's food system, we need to invest in the production, processing and market development of plant-based food proteins and expand the range of proteins on our plates. This requires:

  • Farmers are rewarded for healthy crop rotations with good environmental results, including, for example, organic and agro-ecological production
  • Investments are being made in building value chains for the plant-based sector, including processing, product innovation, research and export potential.
  • The demand for plant-based foods is increased by, among other things, using public procurement muscle to ensure healthy and green food in public procurement.

Denmark now has a historic opportunity to drive a food transition across Europe. We hope the Danish Presidency will use its voice to ensure that EU food policy reflects the needs of the future and not the habits of the past.
