Data is an absolutely crucial cornerstone in the climate transition of construction

8. December 2023
Digitization is the way to easier and cheaper climate documentation in construction. In a new publication, we therefore propose three concrete initiatives for the digitization process.

The building accounts for approx. 30 per cent of the total emissions of Denmark's greenhouse gases. There is therefore no doubt that the key to achieving the reduction target of 70% in 2030 i.a. is to significantly reduce construction emissions.

That is why TEKNIQ supports the Employers, the Green Transition Denmark, the Council for Sustainable Building and the industry association Danske Byggecentre that with effect from 1 January 2023 new and stricter climate requirements have been introduced in the Building Regulations (BR18).

The requirements include, among other things, that for the first time a limit value has been set for large buildings' emission of CO2 and other greenhouse gases and that climate and environmental impact must therefore be documented. For this, new tools are being introduced that the construction operators must use.

A life cycle assessment (LCA), which is a calculation of buildings' climate and
environmental impact over a 50-year period.

In addition, environmental product declarations (EPDs) are introduced, which document the climate and environmental properties of the construction products and materials used, and which form the data basis for the life cycle assessment.

Through dialogue with building product manufacturers, members and suppliers, we have been made aware that EPDs in particular present challenges. That is why TEKNIQ proposes the Employers, the Green Transition Denmark, the Council for Sustainable Construction and the Industry Association Danske Byggecentre three very specific initiatives that will contribute to simplifying and cheapening the use of EPDs, and thus motivating construction product manufacturers to prepare EPDs to a greater extent for their goods and products.

  1. Digitize the process of preparing, maintaining
    and validate environmental product declarations
  2. Release data that must be used to prepare environmental product declarations
  3. Standardize structure and content in EPDs
