Webinar: The EU has postponed increased protection of the environment, climate and health indefinitely. How do we move on?
Time: Thursday 9 November 2023 at 9.00-10.00
The EU's chemical legislation, REACH, which was adopted 17 years ago, needs to be upgraded and improved to that extent. But the EU has now postponed the planned revision indefinitely. This means that the revision now has long prospects with both an upcoming European Parliament election in 2024 and subsequently a new EU Commission.
Almost two years ago, scientists demonstrated that another planetary limit has been exceeded: The chemical pollution has exceeded the limit of how large a load the planet can handle. Nevertheless, we have ended up in a situation where a decisive upgrade of REACH has been pushed to the corner.
So what should happen now? Should the Commission speed up other legislative processes (e.g. toys, cosmetics etc.). Should more voluntary phasing out of the most worrying chemicals be called for, or is something completely third needed?
Hear what industry and environmental organizations say about the latest developments. And hear what Member of the European Parliament Christel Schaldemose thinks the EU Parliament can do for the future process.
