Where does district heating come from?
IDA Energi, in collaboration with the Green Transition Denmark, Concito and Aalborg University, is holding the webinar "Where does district heating come from?" on 2 June at 19-21. Heating our cities has historically made up a very large part of our consumption of fossil fuels, with consequent political dependence on other countries and large CO2 emissions.
The district heating infrastructure has always contributed to lowering this dependence by virtue of fuel flexibility and the ability to utilize energy sources that would otherwise go to waste, for example surplus heat from electricity production, waste incineration and industrial processes and, more recently, surplus power from wind and solar.
When the Heating Planning was started in all the municipalities in 1979, district heating took a leap forward based on cogeneration and waste heat, but its spread until 2021 has been hampered by the fact that fossil gas was cheap. Today, there is political agreement that individual supply of gas and oil must be replaced with district heating or individual heat pumps. District heating must therefore only be assessed in relation to individual heat pumps. This has set the heating planning in motion and opened the way for another strong expansion with district heating in the gas-supplied residential areas, but not in the countryside, where individual heat pumps are best.
The heating planning from the 80s has thus resumed in full force and it is urgent.
- What challenges does it present, and what can be done to promote the transition for the benefit of society?
- How to solve the challenge that the gas boilers in the gas areas are of different ages and that some will switch to a heat pump before it is clear whether there will be district heating?
- What opportunities does it offer on the export market?
