It is now clear that the green domestic flight route, which was supposed to be in Denmark from 2025, no longer makes good sense. Therefore, the funds allocated to this demonstration project should be transferred. It must ensure that all domestic flights in Denmark can be green in 2030

A green domestic flight route in Denmark from 2025 should demonstrate that it can be done before the government's goal of having green domestic flight in Denmark in 2030 had to be realized. But according to the environmental organization the Green Transition Denmark, this no longer makes any sense.

"Green ambitions are good. But as we see it, the best way forward is to drop the demonstration project and use the funds to ensure that we can achieve the actual goal of green domestic aviation by 2030." says Jeppe Juul, head of transport policy at the Green Transition Denmark.

When both the 2030 target and the demonstration project were adopted, everyone had an expectation that you would be able to fly on Danish-produced eFuels. But according to Jeppe Juul, that is not the reality.

"It has turned out to be more difficult to get started with the new fuels for aircraft than expected, and if you were to choose to partially implement the demonstration project anyway, you will spend a lot of money on something that shows very little, while at the same time you do not want to could be sure that the 2030 goal can be realized,” says Jeppe Juul.

Green Transition Denmark therefore recommends that the money for the demonstration project be transferred to ensure that the green fuels are ready in 2030.

"We are far behind in the green transformation of aviation, but in Denmark we have several good realistic projects that can supply the fuels we need to be able to fly greener in the future. But they need greater security than is available today in order to start production. Therefore, it is important that we as a society ensure this, and it will be quite obvious to use the funds from the demonstration project on this,” says Jeppe Juul.

He emphasizes that Denmark can play an important role in the green transformation of aviation, but that the demonstration project in the form it can be realized in now does not seem significant in that connection.

"A realization of the Danish efuels projects for aviation will deliver the climate solutions the world needs going forward. And then we want Danish companies at the forefront with knowledge, know-how and qualified labor that is needed in the rest of the world,” concludes Jeppe Juul.

Furthermore, the Green Transition Denmark recommends a large-scale demonstration project with cleaner aviation fuels at Copenhagen airport, which will investigate how much air pollution and climate-damaging condensation streaks from aircraft can be reduced.

It is now up to the Folketing to decide the future course for the green transformation of aviation in Denmark.
