Green heat

In the Green Transition Denmark, we are working with the phasing out of coal, oil, natural gas and wood biomass in the heat supply both at home and in the EU.

We still have around 300.000 gas boilers and 60.000 oil boilers left in Denmark. In addition, we burn large quantities of wood in the district heating and cogeneration plants. This has consequences for both our health, the climate and the environment - including biodiversity. In the large district heating systems, instead of burning fossil fuels and wood, you can use large heat pumps with heat sources such as geothermal heat, surplus heat, waste water and sea water combined with solar heat and large heat storage.

In dialogue with politicians, companies, municipalities and other stakeholders, we want to restructure the heating sector and use Denmark as a good example in the EU. It will require long-term strategies and political initiatives to ensure a heat supply where we do not burn anything.

Clear guidelines can speed up the roll-out of district heating and the spread of individual heat pumps, which will carry the green heat of the future in Denmark and abroad. At the same time, an end must be put to the unsustainable burning of biomass, which in Denmark is four times greater than the UN Climate Panel recommends per inhabitant. And we must make sure that the gas heating is completed - the sooner, the better.
