Green procurement of cement, concrete and steel
In the Green Transition Denmark, we work to reduce the climate footprint of the construction sector by promoting green procurement with a special focus on cement, concrete and steel both in Denmark and in the EU.
The construction sector is responsible for a significant share of the world's CO2 emissions, with the production of cement, concrete and steel among the most climate-damaging processes. To reduce this burden, we need to ensure a faster transition to low-emission and recycled materials. More climate-friendly alternatives already exist, including CO2-reduced cement, recycled concrete and fossil-free steel, but the market needs clear guidelines and political incentives to support the development and implementation of these solutions.
In dialogue with politicians, companies, municipalities and other stakeholders, we work to set ambitious requirements for public and private procurement that can drive demand for climate-friendly building materials. Denmark can lead the way in the EU by showing how strategic procurement and regulation can create a market for sustainable materials without compromising quality and safety.
Clear guidelines and standards for low-carbon building materials can accelerate the transition and ensure that the next generation of construction is both environmentally friendly and future-proof. At the same time, we must stop using the most climate-damaging materials and work towards a construction sector where recycling and circular solutions are the norm rather than the exception.
