Zero emission zones are a major step forward for climate, noise and air quality
A new political agreement will make it possible for the larger cities in Denmark to create zero-emission zones, where as a rule only electric vehicles may drive. The environmental organization Green Transition Denmark is happy with the new option, but believes that there are strange exceptions.
A new agreement concluded between the government and SF, Enhedslisten, Radikale Venstre and Alternativet gives the municipalities the opportunity to introduce zero emission zones.
"It is really gratifying that the state will no longer prevent the larger cities in Denmark from creating zero-emission zones, but it is strange that they will not give the opportunity to regulate heavy traffic and will only allow it in very limited areas". says Jeppe Juul, Head of Transport Policy at the Green Transition Denmark.
The agreement stipulates that the zero-emission zones should not include trucks and buses, which the Green Transition Denmark considers to be completely misunderstood.
"There is no reason to except buses and trucks - quite the contrary. It is a strange and misunderstood consideration to take in densely populated urban areas, where we precisely need the full effect of zero-emission zones in the form of less noise and air pollution", says Jeppe Juul.
New sales of electric trucks in Denmark were already at 6,3% in 2023, and most city buses have already been converted to electricity in 2025. Jeppe Juul emphasizes that there are therefore no technical reasons to exempt these vehicles. Zero emission zones could instead be used to bring the last city buses. At the same time, he refers to what is happening in other countries.
"In the Netherlands, by next year, they will have a minimum of 30 cities with zero-emission zones, which specifically apply to vans and trucks. So it would be absurd to pretend it can't be done, and we hope it's a mistake that will be corrected before the law is passed". says Jeppe Juul.
The political agreement must be presented as a bill in the autumn.
