Trans4Demo

Trans4Demo (Contentious Politics and Democratic Renewal in Sustainability Transitions) is an evidence-based and impact-driven set of actions designed to address the contentious politics arising from climate change and sustainability transitions. These conflicts represent a critical challenge for democratic systems, and their significance is expected to grow in the future. Authoritarian tendencies and right-wing populism have eroded social cohesion, making significant parts of EU populations less willing to adapt their practices and hindering effective responses to climate challenges.

The main objective of Trans4Demo is to investigate the role and evolution of diverse forms of opposition and contentious politics surrounding sustainability transitions and their impacts on democracy. The project aims to deliver a temporality-sensitive conceptual framework, practical understandings, and policy recommendations to support the reinvigoration of democratic systems. By examining these intersections, Trans4Demo identifies specific, consensus-based, and politically normative goals that diverse political communities across Europe could pursue.

Empirically, the project focuses on developing practical understandings of the role of various bottom-up mobilisations in the context of populist challenges, identifying novel sites of constructive democratic engagement, and addressing the role of trust in the democratic process, including the integrity of electoral systems. Building on these insights, Trans4Demo will provide research-based policy recommendations that balance grassroots and institutional perspectives to foster democratic renewal.

To achieve these goals, Trans4Demo employs triangulated and participatory methodologies, including case studies and future-oriented approaches. The project integrates interdisciplinary research to uncover the causes and consequences of political contention, explores innovative engagement practices, and develops actionable strategies to enhance inclusive, just, and effective democratic governance. Through stakeholder engagement and cross-country collaboration, Trans4Demo ensures that its outcomes are both impactful and aligned with the pressing need to address the dual crises of democracy and climate change.
